Sunday, January 14,  9 am to 1 pm,  Hiking.  Directions:  457 Sabal Palm Road, Naples, FL.  The trailhead is 3.2 miles East of Collier Blvd (CR-951) on Sabal Palm Road in Picayune Strand State Forest.  Look for the trailhead sign on the right.  Lat-Long: 26.095287, -81.634100

 Descripton:  Hike 3.4 miles through flat pinewoods with cypress trees in areas that are in a slightly lower elevation.  The trail will pass by a colony of endangered red cockaded woodpecker nests.  Portions of the trail may be wet so hikers should be prepared to wade in places.  Wear old tennis shoes or hiking boots.  Bring one liter of water, a light lunch or snack, bug spray, sunscreen and a change of dry socks and shoes in your car for the ride home.  Optional:  Hiking stick and binoculars.  Limit 12 people, moderate difficulty.  RSVP  Carl Kepford   Phone: 239-253-4255 email: carl@tenthousandislands.net  or Donna Hornsby  email: dhhiker13@yahoo.com


Thursday, January 18, Alligator Amblers monthly meeting  at Christus Victor Lutheran Church, 15600 Tamiami Trail North, Naples, FL 34110.  Social gathering 6:30 pm, meeting starts promptly at 7:00 pm.  Members, Sharon, Deb and Andy rafted the Colorado River and explored the Grand Canyon.  They will share their exciting experiences with us.

201803 March Activity Calendar

MARCH 2018

Friday, March 2 at 5 pm – Monday, March 5 at 3 pm.  Hike the Florida National Scenic Trail from Oasis Visitor Center on Rte 41 to exit 63 on I-75.  Oasis Visitor center is located at 52105 Tamiami Trail E., Ochopee, FL 34141.   Description:  Backpack the Florida National Scenic Trail 30 miles from the Oasis Visitor Center on Rte 41 to Exit 63 on I-75.  Hikers will camp in two places along the way.  The trail will require wading in places and will be soggy in others.  Hikers should be prepared to wade carefully in certain areas because of holes in limestone and hidden cypress knees.  On Friday, March 2, we will arrange for parking vehicles at the I-75 parking lot for the drive home at the conclusion of the hike.  On Saturday, March 3, we will leave the Oasis visitor center at 9 am.  Hikers should be prepared to carry four liters of water and water filtration and purification gear in addition to their backpack, tent or hammock, sleeping bag and food.  Trekking pole(s) or walking stick recommended for maintaining balance while wading.

Turkey hunters will be using other areas of Big Cypress Preserve this weekend.  We recommend that you wear one item of orange clothing.

Public invited, but first preference given to existing FTA members.  Advertised to public but hikers must be certified capable of this event by the Activity Leaders and be an FTA member at the start of the hike.  Limit: 8 people.  This hike is very strenuous.

Saturday, March 10, 8:30 am.   Swamp Buggy ride and Alligator show.  Wooten’s Everglades Swampbuggy rides, 32330 Tammiami Trail E. Ochopee, FL.  Activity Description:  See the natural beauty of a cypress forest and possible sightings of wild animals of the region.  Participants meet at the picnic tables in front of the gift shop at 8:30 am.  Cost of the buggy ride is $22.00 per person and includes Alligator show.  Parking and ticket purchasing is on the south side of Tamiami Trail, buggy ride is on the north side of US41.  Everyone will cross the street as a group.  Public invitied.  Leisure rating.  RSVP to Sharon at 239-357-4418   sharonsuhar@yahoo.com

Saturday, March 17,  Hike.  9am.  Caloosahatchee Creek Preserve East, 10130 Bayshore Rd., N. Ft Myers, FL 33917.   Hiking on a boardwalk and grassy trail.  3 1/2 – 4 miles.  Bring water, sunscreen, bug repellent, hat and sanck.  Shoes might get wet, so bring another pair.  Dogs permitted in park on a leash.  Public invited.
