APRIL 2017

Sunday, April 9, 8am – Tuesday, April 11,  Three Day Trail Maintenance and Campout.   Mile Marker 63 off I-75 on south side.  SE corner of large new (mostly unused) parking lot.  Trim vegetation along the Florida Trail using loppers.  Refresh orange blazes when needed.  Must be able to backpack 6 miles per day in swamp.  We will have the tools, you bring: tent, sleeping bag and everything needed for three lunches, two evening meals and two breakfasts plus three bottles of water.  We will have water purification pumps to refill your bottles at camp as needed.  We will be camping two nights at Ivy Camp ( a primitive camp with no facilities).  Public invited.  Limit 5 people.  Strenuous difficulty.  RSVP Chuck 239-398-3820  flswampeagle@aol.com  or Mickey 239-839-3286  Hike1962@yahoo.com

Friday, April 14, 2017  8 am – 11 am   Bike Ride – Cecil M. Webb Wildlife Management Area.  Bike ride on improved road.  10 mile round trip along Webb Lake.  Stops along the way to look for wildlife and snacks.  Bring water, sunscreen, Bug spray, bike helmet, snack.  $3 day use fee.  FTA members only.  Limit 10 people, leisure.  RSVP  Sharon 239-357-4418   sharonsuhar@yahoo.com   cancelled

 Thursday, April 20,  Monthly Alligator Amblers Meeting   Social: 6:30 PM    Meeting 7:00 PM   New Meeting Location:  Christus Victor Lutheran Church, 15600 Tamiami Trail North, Naples, FL 34110.  Dexter Sowell, a biological scientist with the Florida Forest Service, will talk about the recent Picayune Strand State Forest wildfire including the short and long term impact on wildlife and vegetation there.

MAY 2017

Thursday, May 18,  Alligator Amblers monthly meeting  at Christus Victor Church, 15600 Tamiami Trail North, Naples, FL 34110.  Social gathering 6:30 pm, meeting starts promptly at 7:00 pm. Our guest speaker for the evening will be Patrick Higgins, the recently elected President of the Friends of the Fakahatchee.  He will bring us up to date on recent developments in the Fakahatchee Strand State Park including the proposal for the Boardwalk extension and the possibility of new culverts on Janes Scenic Highway.  Members should be very interested in this wonderful resource because they conduct trail clearing operations there as well as leading hikes and bicycle trips in the park.  After the presentation, members will get an update on past and future events in Southwest Florida.

Saturday, June 3, 8:30 am Hike Estero Bay Preserve, 4940 West Broadway, Estero, FL  off US 41 in Estero.  Leisure hike through scrub flatwoods and muddy salt flats;  observe gopher tortoises, fiddler crabs, sea purslane, mangroves, wild flowers and the Estero River.  Wear old sneakers, bring water, sunscreen, hat and a snack. Meet at 8:30 am in parking lot at end of West Broadway.  Directions: I-75 to exit 123 – Corkscrew Road.  Turn onto Corkscrew, drive to light on 41 turn right, take a left turn at next light West Broadway and drive to parking lot.  Public invited. JULY 2017

Sunday, July 30, 2017  9 am – 1 pm   Paddleboarding, 490 Hernando Drive, Marco Island, FL 34145.  Paddleboard in secluded lagoon at entrance to Tigertail Beach.  Cost is $45.00 for four hours.  Paddleboards, safety equipment, and instruction provided by vendor.  Restrooms and outdoor restaurant are on site.  Collier County residents (with beach sticker) can park free.  Cars without a Collier County beach sticker will pay an $8.00 parking fee.  This is a great place to learn to paddleboard.  No experience necessary.  The location is sheltered from large waves.  You can paddleboard, then walk over to the gulf beach, then paddleboard some more.  Public invited, limit 20 people moderate difficulty.  Paddleboards provide by vendor.  RSVP  Carl 239-253-4245  carl@tenthousandislands.net   or  Len 239-498-6657  lenhannahs@gmail.com
