Saturday, February 15, Fakahatchee Trail Maintenance,  8:15 am – 3:00 pm.  Location: Fakahatchee Ranger Station 137 Coastline Drive, Copeland.

8:15 Arrival 137 Coastline Drive (directions below)- Park in the back behind the ranger station (bathrooms/water at visitor center in front).

8:30 Group up for equipment check, signing the FTA Assumption of Risk and Liability form, work groups, carpooling to Gate 18.

9:00 Head out to Gate 18

9:40 Arrive at Gate 18 – it is 9.8 miles from the Ranger Station. Janes to Gate 12 is in very good shape. 3.5 miles to Gate 18 is in excellent shape due to no vehicular traffic allowed (I will have the gate code).

2:00 Meet at Gate 18 and return to Ranger Station

3:00 Head to Camellia Street Grill, Everglades City. Post maintenance gathering.

RSVP to Debra Taylor if you plan to attend. Rain will cancel. I will contact you the day before if canceling.

Lopping, weed whacking; brushing back and clearing flagged trees; treating herbicide on cut Brazilian Pepper Bush; blazing.
Please bring 2 quarts of water, long sleeves/pants, hat, gloves, snacks/lunch, favorite lopper/hand saw, a change of shirt and dry shoes. Equipment will also be available. Plan to carry your water and snacks.

There have been no biting insects.

Carpooling to Ranger Station (you must coordinate w/leader if needed):

A standard meet up spot is Cracker Barrel, 3845 Tollgate Blvd, Naples on Collier Blvd and 75.  Meet at the back SE corner allowing 40 min to get to the FAK via 75/29 S.  From 75, Exit 101 S on Collier, left on Beck, left into Cracker Barrel parking on left.

You must be a Florida Trail member to attend this maintenance activity.  Strenuous rating.

Tuesday, February 18, 9:00 am – 11:30 am.  3 mile Hike,   CREW Flint Pen Strand Trails – 15970 Bonita Beach Road, Bonita Springs, FL 34135

From Fort Myers: From I-75 S, take exit 116 and turn east on Bonita Beach Road. Travel approximately 3.8 miles and turn left onto Vincent Road (opposite the Bonita Springs fire station #26). The trailhead and Main parking lot are on the left.

From Naples: From I-75 N, take exit 116 and turn east on Bonita Beach Road. Travel approximately 3.8 miles and turn left onto Vincent Road (opposite the Bonita Springs fire station #26). The trailhead and  Main parking lot are on the left.

Activity Description:  We will hike part of the Red trail and most of the Orange trail plus side trips to the lake and the alligator pond.  These are easy dry and sandy trails through pine flatwoods, old homesteads and oak hammocks. Total distance is approximately 3 miles. Elevation change is less than 10’. With luck, we will see interesting birds, deer, and a large alligator. Trail map can be viewed at https://crewtrust.org/flint-pen-strand-2/. Bring lots of water. If the day is predicted to be hot, bring more water!

Public invited.  Limit 15 people.                 Leisure activity level.

Thursday, February 20, Monthly Meeting, Estero Community Center,  9200 Corkscrew Palms Blvd., Estero, FL 33928.   6:30 social get-together,  7:00 pm Guest Speaker -Dan Moser, coordinator for Bike/Walk Lee County. He will tell us about his organization and how we can best experience the biking and walking trails in Lee County.  This promises to be a very informative presentation.

 After the speaker concludes his presentation, our business meeting will be devoted to selecting options for our Chapter Operating Procedures.  Please come and give us your advice.
